Watch R.I. Police Stop Violent Encounter Outside Station

Oct. 18, 2023
A Bristol police sergeant shot and wounded a naked man accused of following two college students to the police station and ramming his vehicle into theirs.

A violent confrontation erupted outside a Rhode Island police station last week as a naked man was shot and wounded after he allegedly followed and slammed into a car carrying two college students.

The incident happened late Thursday when two Roger Williams University students drove to the Bristol police station in an effort to escape a man who had been harassing them at Colt State Park, The Providence Journal reports. Naked in his car, the suspect—identified as Mark Rinn—followed the two students to the station.

When Rinn reached the station, he pulled up and park his vehicle next to the students. In recently released security camera footage, a station desk sergeant came out to help the students, and a retired officer positioned himself behind Rinn's vehicle.

Rinn then backs up and rams his vehicle into the student's car, pushing it into the station. After he ran into the vehicle a second time, the desk sergeant opened fire.

Rinn slammed into the vehicle a third time, and his car came to a rest. The sergeant approached the car and began performing life-saving measures on Rinn until medics reached the scene and rushed to the hospital.

No officers were hurt in the incident. The students suffered minor injuries.

Rinn was charged with four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and ordered to stay away from the two students.
